Eleven

“Earth to Harrison. Are you reading, over?” At the sound of a pile of papers hitting his desk, Harrison lifts his gaze from his computer screen to find his business partner, Gene, grinning at him. “Did you hear a word of what I said?”

He shakes his head. He’s clueless.

“The contract for the Parker deal.” Gene says with a scoff. “You wanted to give it the once over?”

“Right,” Harrison says, attempting to drag his thoughts back into the realms of work. And it’s not an easy task. Not today, at least. Not after everything that happened last night. After which, it feels as though his very existence hangs in the balance.

Depending on which way Maddie’s decision goes?

“Are you in or are you out?” Gene asks, just as Harrison’s mind slips back to thoughts of his wife and his oldest, dearest, closest best friend. And never mind what they may or may not have done on the back seat of his pal’s motor, whether it will all continue or not.

“That’s exactly what I’d like to…” realising he’s in the process of giving an entirely disassociated answer to a question that appeared suitably phrased regarding what is or isn’t happening with his wife, Harrison clamps his mouth shut and reaches for the contract.

“It’s big,” he says, as he picks up the ream of paper.

And there’s another question that could easily be misconstrued. Or not a question. A statement. A point of fact. He wonders if those words left Maddie’s mouth last night.

Isn’t it big?

Or, oh, my God, you’re huge.

Maybe she even went all in. Fuck me, big boy. Fuck me hard. Her legs spread. Her eyes half-closed. He imagines his pal had no trouble at all showing her a good time. And maybe that was why she was so up for it last night after they got back to the house? Alfie showed her things she would never have before dreamed possible.

Now she wants more.

It seems a more likely scenario than his wife being so disgusted by the idea and vowing never to have anything to do with it.

So, he ought to be pleased?

“If you’re against it…” Gene says, tapping his index finger on the top piece of paper, just as Harrison’s eyes snap upwards towards his.

“I’m not. Not exactly. It’s just that… Oh,” he pauses. Clearing his throat. “You mean the contract…”

The words are out of his mouth before he censures them, and yes, he’s already certain Gene notices the disconnect between the conversation and what’s going on inside Harrison’s head as well as he does. So does he have to go ahead and compound his embarrassment?

“Something bothering you?” Gene asks, concern creasing his brow. “If this isn’t a good time, I can get the solicitors to give it the once over instead?”

And give them free rein to charge them another thousand pounds for doing something that ordinarily he’d have no trouble at all doing himself?

“No. It’s fine. But maybe just leave it with me, will you? I can look at it first thing tomorrow morning.
